Drowning in Clutter???
By: Connie Gardner
Many of us are and we don’t even know where it all came from! Clutter seems to just appear and multiply!
In order to eliminate clutter, we have to figure out what the items are, where they came from and what we can do with them.
First, were the items a gift from friend or family? Be careful about hurting feelings if you get rid of the item. Was the item purchased on an ‘impulse buy’ and now that it’s home you really don’t know why you bought it? Consider, will I use or am I using this item now or in the future?
Many things we buy these days are very expensive, please be sure that you will use what you spending your hard earned dollars on. Stop for a moment in the store and ask yourself if you really need or will use what you are thinking of buying. Is this item going to improve my quality of life? Is it going to fulfill a need or sincere wish. If not, leave it in the store.
Making good wise shopping decisions not only makes good common sense, it makes good ‘dollars and cents’.
To de-clutter your home you need four containers or stacks.
• Keep and use NOW
• Label and store
• Give to friend or donate to charity
• Trash
You may add a “Yard/Garage Sale” container if you are planning to have a sale within a few weeks, not months!
As you sort through the clutter, be sure to be honest about the items. Don’t save clothing that you wore in high school with the thought that you will lose weight and wear it again. When you lose the weight, reward yourself with buying or making something new for the ‘new’ you. Remember also, elastic doesn’t store well and if you either don’t want to or don’t know how to replace the elastic in waistbands etc, don’t save the clothing.
As soon as you have completed the ‘sort’, do exactly what it says on the container you have made. “Keep and use Now” means, go put the item in a convenient place to be used. “Label and store” - label the container and take it to the storage area in your home. “Give…” - today or tomorrow, not in a month or two and finally take out the trash.
When these tasks are done, you will be rewarded with a clean home and the weight of clutter will be gone! Congratulations --Good Job!
